Disease Descriptions
Below is a brief description of the viral and bacterial diseases that Canine Spectra vaccines prevent. As you can see, some of these diseases are severely debilitating and often fatal. Remember, vaccine is powerless once your dog has one of these diseases. In many cases, little can be done after onset. Don’t risk losing your faithful friend and companion. Vaccination is critical to protect your dog in advance.
All Canine Spectra vaccines are combination vaccines, meaning they immunize your dog to more than one disease. There are differences between each vaccine. See the Protection Chart to determine specific disease immunities offered by each.
DISTEMPER
A pervasive, often fatal viral disease—once a leading cause of canine death and still a serious threat. Preliminary symptoms are like those of upper respiratory infection in humans—fever, cough and nasal discharge. Left untreated, neural disturbance may cause muscle twitching and convulsions. Resistant to treatment, but preventable through vaccination.
ADENOVIRUS TYPE 1 (HEPATITIS)
Causes severe kidney damage and often leads to death. Symptoms include appetite loss, fever, listlessness, vomiting, frequent thirst, eye and nose discharge.
ADENOVIRUS TYPE 2
Respiratory Attacks the upper respiratory tract and causes inflammation of the trachea and bronchial passages. Symptoms include fever, breathing difficulty and persistent coughing.
PARAINFLUENZA
As its name suggests, symptoms are similar to flu in humans. Another contributor to kennel cough. While usually a mild respiratory infection, it can be severe in puppies, old dogs or any dog in compromised health.
PARVOVIRUS
A widespread disease that causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. Particularly threatening for puppies and old dogs. Leads to heart problems in some cases.
CORONAVIRUS
A contagious intestinal disease that causes vomiting, diarrhea and life-threatening dehydration. Especially dangerous for puppies, old dogs, or dogs already in poor health.
LEPTOSPIRA
A contagious bacterial infection which may cause liver and kidney damage. Early symptoms include appetite loss, fever and depression followed by vomiting, dehydration, jaundice, excessive thirst and urination.
Spectra 9 and Spectra 10 protect against 4 strains of Lepto: 1. Leptospira canicola; 2. Leptospira grippotyphosa; 3. Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae; 4.Leptospira pomona
LYME DISEASE
A potentially serious illness gained from the bite of an infected Ixodes tick, or deer tick. Pets infected with Lyme disease may not show symptoms for two to five months. Typical symptoms usually include fever, loss of appetite, fatigue lameness and swelling of joints.
